of the Day Vicar Jon Myers Prelude
“Italian Hymn” Krapf *We stand. Thanksgiving
for Baptism All may make the sign of the cross,
the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. P: Blessed
be the holy Trinity, + one God, the fountain of living water, the rock who
gave us birth, our light and our salvation. C: Amen. P: Joined
to Christ in the waters of baptism, we are clothed with God's mercy and
forgiveness. Let us give thanks for
the gift of baptism. Blessed are you, O God, maker and
ruler of all things. Your voice
thundered over the waters at creation.
You water the mountains and send springs into the valleys to refresh
and satisfy all living things. Through the waters of the flood you
carried those in the ark to safety.
You led your people Israel from slavery to freedom. In the wilderness you nourished them with
water from the rock, and you brought them across the river Jordan to the
promised land. By the baptism of his death and
resurrection, your Son Jesus has carried us to safety and freedom. The floods shall not overwhelm us, and the
deep shall not swallow us up, for Christ has brought us over to the land of
promise. He sends us to make
disciples, baptizing in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the
Holy Spirit. Pour out your Holy Spirit; wash away
sin in this cleansing water; clothe the baptized with Christ; and claim your
daughters and sons, no longer slave and free, no longer male and female, but
one with all the baptized in Christ Jesus, who lives and reigns with you in
the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. Peace P: The
peace of Christ be with you always. C: And
also with you. The
people may greet one another with a sign of Christ's peace, and may say,
"Peace be with you," or similar words. Gathering Song #408 “Come, Thou Almighty King” Greeting P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And
also with you. Kyrie Canticle of
Praise Prayer of
the Day P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Let
us pray: God of heaven
and earth, before the foundation of the universe and the beginning of time
you are the triune God: Author of
creation, eternal Word of salvation, life-giving Spirit of wisdom. Guide us
to all truth by your Spirit, that we may proclaim all that Christ has
revealed and rejoice in the glory he shares with us. Glory and praise to you,
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, now and forever. C: Amen. We sit. First
Reading: Proverbs
8:1–4, 22–31 In
this passage, Woman Wisdom is depicted not only as the first creation of God
but also as God's helper, rejoicing in God's creation, especially in human
beings. Does
not wisdom call, and does not understanding raise her voice? On the heights,
beside the way, at the crossroads she takes her stand; beside the gates in
front of the town at the entrance of the portals she cries out: "To
you, O people, I call, and my cry is to all that live. The LORD created me at
the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of long ago. Ages ago I was
set up, at the first, before the beginning of the earth. When there were no
depths I was brought forth, when there were no springs abounding with water.
Before the mountains had been shaped, before the hills, I was brought forth
when he had not yet made earth and fields, or the world's first bits of soil. When
he established the heavens, I was there, when he drew a circle on the face of
the deep, when he made firm the skies above, when he established the
fountains of the deep, when he assigned to the sea its limit, so that the
waters might not transgress his command, when he marked out the foundations
of the earth, then I was beside him, like a master worker; and I was daily
his delight, rejoicing before him always, rejoicing in his inhabited world
and delighting in the human race.” A: The
word of the Lord. C: Thanks
be to God. Psalm: Psalm 8 1O LORD our Lord, how
majestic is your name in all the earth!— 2you whose glory is chanted above the heavens out
of the mouths of infants and children; you
have set up a fortress against your enemies, to
silence the foe and avenger. 3When I consider your heavens, the work of
your fingers, the
moon and the stars you have set in their courses, 4what are mere mortals that
you should be mindful of them, human
beings that you should care for them? 5Yet you have made them little less than
divine; with
glory and honor you crown them. 6You have made them rule over the works of
your hands; you
have put all things under their feet: 7all flocks and cattle, even
the wild beasts of the field, 8the birds of the air, the fish of the sea, and
whatever passes along the paths of the sea. 9O LORD our Lord, how majestic
is your name in all the earth! Second
Reading: Romans
5:1–5 Paul
describes the life of faith with reference to God, Jesus, and the Holy
Spirit. Even now, we have peace with God through Jesus, and our hope for the
future is grounded in the love of God that we experience through Christ's
Holy Spirit. Therefore, since we are
justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we
stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. 3And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings,
knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4and endurance produces character, and character produces hope,
5and hope does not disappoint us, because
God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has
been given to us. *We stand. Gospel
Acclamation Gospel: John 16:12–15 P: The
holy gospel according to John, the 16th chapter. C: Glory
to you, O Lord. Jesus' ongoing presence with the
disciples will be borne by the coming Spirit, who will guide them and communicate
to them Jesus' will and glory. 12I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear
them now. 13When the Spirit of truth comes, he will
guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will
speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to
come. 14He will glorify me, because he will take
what is mine and declare it to you. 15All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that
he will take what is mine and declare it to you. P: The
gospel of the Lord. C: Praise
to you, O Christ. We sit. Children’s Message Vicar Jon Myers “Jesus Loves Me” Sermon Vicar
Jon Myers *We stand. Hymn of the Day #412 “Come, Join the Dance of Trinity” Nicene Creed We believe in one
God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one
Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the
virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under
Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the
Father. He will come again
in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the
Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the
Son, who with the Father
and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and
apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the
forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the
dead, and the life of the world to come.
Amen. We sit. Offering Offertory Anthem “Praise the
Father, Praise the Son” Cash/Tomlin *We stand. Offertory Hymn #186 “Create
